Medical Doctor Died of Lassa Fever in Rivers State

PORT HARCOURT—A medical doctor with Rivers State-owned Braithwait Memorial Specialist Hospital, BMH, Dr. Livy Ijamala, has died from Lassa Fever, bringing to three the number of people killed by the disease in the state.
Chairman of the state branch of Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Dr. Furo Green, disclosed this yesterday in Port Harcourt, saying the late doctor, Ijamala, who died in the early hours of yesterday from the ailment, had contact with patients infected with Lassa Fever.

Dr.Furo added that the late medical doctor had been buried in line with recommendations of World Health Organization, WHO, for deaths from contagious diseases.
He also said a team from WHO had already visited the hospital for assessment, adding that the hospital had been decontaminated and that those who had contacts with the late Dr. Ijamala had been placed on observation.
He said: “Last night, one of our hard-working doctors in the department of obstetrics gynecology, Dr. Livy Ijamala, lost his life following infection with Lassa Fever.
This is the price medical doctors and health personnel pay for offering health services to the public.
“The hospital is being decontaminated as we speak. All medical doctors and healthcare personnel that had primary contact with the late medical doctor have been placed under observation.”
… as doctors begin strike
He also said medical doctors in the state were on three days strike to protest the frequent abduction of medical doctors in the state.
He said within the week two of his colleagues, Dr. Isaac Opurum and Dr. Ib Aprioku were taken hostage at separate times. He said in 2015, 21 doctors were abducted in the state.
According to him, the warning strike was to draw attention to the plight of medical doctors.
He said: “While we are not happy to go on strike, the strike now appears to be a blessing in disguise because fewer doctors and patients came to the hospital today, thereby, reducing the rate of contacts among medical doctors and patients.

APC Saddened As Gov. Wike Drops Charges Against 3 Notorious Armed Robbers Alleged To Have Killed Police And Army Personnel | Sahara Reporters

APC Saddened As Gov. Wike Drops Charges Against 3 Notorious Armed Robbers Alleged To Have Killed Police And Army Personnel.

| Sahara Reporters TV: On November 19, 2015, three members of a notorious armed robbery gang operating in Port Harcourt Metropolis with formidable weaponry headed by one George, a native of Rumukunde Community in Emohua LGA of Rivers State were arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Rivers State Police Command.
The suspects, Charles Emesiobi Nwaoepi, Goodnews Kejeh, and Goodluck Wogbo, who subsequently made confessional statements, were arrested. Several weapons and ammunition were found to be in the suspects' possession including, one AK-47 No. 2770 belonging to the Nigeria Police, one AK-49 Rifle with butt No. 44150 belonging to the Nigerian Army, and one K2 Rifle with No. 046484 belonging to the Nigeria Police along with 44 rounds of 7.62mm and 55 rounds of 5.56mm live ammunition.

Investigations by the Nigeria Police reportedly revealed that the suspects killed officers of the Police and Nigerian Army before carting away their arms in various operations in the past. For example, it was discovered that on October 14, 2015, the notorious gang allegedly robbed Diamond Bank, Port Harcourt among other daredevil operations across the State.

According to their investigations, the Police stated that other criminal activities carried out by the gang were the murder in cold blood of several police and military personnel including one Lance Corporal Yohanna Kamuji and Corporal Bello Lazarus both attached to 20 Battalion of the Nigeria Army, Bori Camp, Port Harcourt. Army eye witnesses confirmed the suspects to be behind the killing of their deceased colleagues.

The All Progressives Congress is shocked that right from the day the suspects were arrested and two of them charged to court there had been intense pressure by officials of the Rivers State Government to have them released as the suspects are alleged to be the boys of a serving Government House Chief of Staff.

With the Wike government on its way out, the governor’s Attorney-General through the Director of Public Prosecution [DPP] has finally advised against further prosecution of the dangerous criminals who were responsible for the killing of many innocent citizens including members of the Nigeria Police and Nigerian Army. This is contained in a legal advice by the Director of Public Prosecution [DPP] advising that the charges against the 3 gang members be dropped while their case files have been returned to the Police.

The Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, wishes to re-iterate that this singular act by the Rivers State Government goes to confirm, beyond any shadow of doubt, that the officials of government of Barr. Nyesom Wike are behind the spate of killings, kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery and other crimes that have bedevilled Rivers State since May 29, 2015.

The APC would like to draw the attention of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) and the D-G, DSS to take notice of the great injustice this act by Governor Nyesom Wike will mean to those service personnel who have paid the supreme price and the families and survivors they left behind. Overall, the dropping of charges on these criminals will only embolden more criminals to kill and maim innocent people and residents of Rivers State.

DSS did not rescue my wife, I paid N1.3m to kidnappers – Ogude

Super Eagles and Amkar Perm of Russia midfielder, Fegor Ogude, has revealed that his wife was set free by her abductors after he paid the sum of N1.3 million. This is contrary to claims by family sources that the victim was rescued by officials of the Department of State Services, DSS.
It will be recalled that Ogude’s wife, Maimunat, was on January 4 abducted from her family home in Warri, Delta State and the kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom of N30m.
The Media Officer of Nigeria U-23 team, Timi Ebikagboro had disclosed on Sunday night that Maimunat was ‘now a free woman.’
In a chat with TheCable, the midfielder confirmed she was released on Sunday night, saying he paid N1.3m for his wife’s release as against the N30m her abductors had pressed for.
“Well, I paid nothing much for her release. I paid N1.3m, though they demanded N30m.
Fegor also said his wife was alright, but they were not taking her state of health for granted, so they were following the normal procedures of ensuring she undergoes medical examination.
“Yes, she is alright but I have to ensure that she is.
“I have taken her to the hospital for proper medical tests and checkup because the kind of ordeal she must have gone through in the hands of the armed men is nothing to be taken for granted. I have to be sure that she is very okay.
“In spite of the unexpected occurrence, I was still a very happy man.
“You know that a lot of people will go there and won’t come back alive, so I am happy that she is alright and alive.”
“She was taken to a very bad place, a swampy forest, a dirty place to be kept for almost a week. Imagine what she must have faced during the number of days she was kept there. But I am thanking God that I got her back alive.
“It is her life that’s the most important thing to me,” Ogude said.

lady Gaga Wins Her First Golden Globe! Slays Her Acceptance Speech

If Lady Gaga truly did turn to Marilyn Monroe for style inspiration Sunday night, then the late iconic Hollywood actress definitely must have sent positive vibes her way. The six-time Grammy Award winner and pop star took home her first Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for her role in American Horror Story: Hotel, beating out certified Tinseltown favorites like Kirsten Dunst, Sarah Hay, Felicity Huffman, and Queen Latifah.

In a way only Gaga could, the newly-minted silver screen star stepped on stage and appeared instantly out of breath. “I feel like Cher in that John Patrick Shanley film, Moonstruck, right now,” she told the audience. “This is one of the greatest moments of my life. I have to thank Ryan Murphy—you’re just a wonderful human being. You have believed in me so much and been such a good friend to me. Thank you to my wonderful cast. I love you guys so much. You’re my family forever.”

The 29-year-old beauty and soon-to-be wife to Taylor Kinney (who himself nabbed a People's Choice Award just last week) moved on to thank Horror Story castmates like Matt Bomer, Angela Bassett, Denis O’Hare, and Evan Peters, among others. “I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer, but music worked out first,” the New York born and raised talent revealed. “To my family, I love you so much. I have to thank my team. You guys pick me up every single day, and the things I put my body through and my mind through when I’m working, it makes me like a child. I can’t do things on my own. You allow that and you take care of me.”

5Things Every Woman Should Know!!!

It seems like from the time we are very young women are affected in some way by the monthly cycle. For young girls it is through our older sisters, cousins, aunts, and female relatives where we see the effects of menstruation, in how they change their day to day, moods, and how they interact with us as children.
In adolescence we look forward to the growth into womanhood. We think that menstruation will be a sign showing we’re becoming adults, even though we don’t understand the hormones and moodiness which we later learn will plague us through one week out of the month– not to mention the uncomfortable cramps, struggling with being at school when you don’t feel good, and not being able adequately process and deal with the all the changes happening in our suddenly strange little bodies.
Once we’ve passed the mile marker into adulthood, we spend the rest of our time trying to figure out how to get rid of menses, contain it, control it, or otherwise manipulate this very natural part of our lives until menopause…which is an entirely different post.
What we don’t learn about our periods is learning to track and pay attention to what your cycle is doing; naturally, this is your first clue as to what’s happening with your health. Furthermore, it’ll give you great insight into your own moods, feelings, energy levels, and the power of really knowing and understanding your menstrual cycle. This gives you the power to use the information to enhance your life, instead of believing it is a burden.
Here are five things you may not have known about your cycle and how they can relate to your health.

1) Notice the Flow

Just keeping an eye on your monthly flow can help you determine changes happening in your body. Is it lighter? Heavier? Did you have to use more protection or less? Are you suddenly bleeding more than usual?
Granted, it may seem like you’re losing a lot of blood during your cycle, but, on average, women only shed about a cup from the uterine lining. It’s not unusual to have a few days of heavy flow. With that said, increased heavy flow for 5 days or more can cause anemia, polyps, or endometriosis, some very serious health issues.
On the other side of this, if you continually experience extremely light periods (without birth control) you could be suffering from poor nutrition, extreme stress, or it could be an indicator of an auto-immune disorder or other health issue.

2) Notice the color
Ideally, your period will start with a bright cranberry color. However, if your cycle starts with brown, dried up looking blood this is old blood which didn’t get shed last cycle. This can be a symptom of low-progesterone. On the flip side, if it’s heavy bleeding with almost a dark purple look to it, this could be s symptom of too much estrogen in the body. An easy check. Does your period resemble frozen blueberries (too much estrogen), strawberry jam (too little estrogen) or cranberry (healthy).

3) Notice the texture
If you suddenly notice dark or liver colored clots and clumps in your period, where you normally don’t, it may be time to pay attention to what’s happening with your body. There are a lot of things in the body which can affect menstrual flow. Heavy, dark clots could possibly indicate an iron deficiency, a vitamin deficiency such as C or K. Painful menses with clots could indicate endometriosis, fibroids, or cysts.

4) Notice PMS symptom(Premenstrual Syndrome)
As a young woman you may have been taught PMS is a natural part of having your monthly cycle, but the truth is, PMS isn’t something women should struggle with. Your first instinct might be to reach for painkillers, but pay attention first to what’s happening and how often.
PMS can happen anytime between ovulation and menses and can be a source of real emotional and physical suffering for many women. Symptoms can including mood swings, bloating, headaches, and fatigue. Not to mention cravings.
Making some changes to your food/drink during this time will help. Look for foods high in magnesium, calcium, and B vitamins. Extreme PMS can be a symptom of emotional imbalance, which can lead to other health issues.

5) Notice the frequency
Of course if you’re not on birth control and suddenly miss your period, the first thing you want to check is if you’re pregnant. If that’s a big no, then, keep in mind the absence or frequency of your cycle can tell you a lot about your health. The absence of your cycle can be called secondary amenorrhea, when it happens for six months or more. Furthermore, this is often seen in obese women, or incredibly lean women (less than 13% body fat). Excessive exercise for long periods of time can cause this also. If none of those factors fit, then keep in mind it could be an over-active thyroid or even a brain tumor.

On the flip side, super short cycles—bleeding more than once in a 28 day cycle—can indicate a possibly sluggish thyroid. If you’re cycle is three days or less, then it could indicate a shortage of estrogen in the body.
Whatever may be happening with your cycle, keep in mind, your monthly flux can be a very strong indicator of your health. Instead of hating your cycle, use it to keep yourself in the best health ever.

Duchess Kate Celebrates 34th Birthday

five things you may not have known about Kate Middleton.
1. Kate has long had the makings of an international superstar: Between the ages of 2 and 4, she, sister Pippa, and parents Carole and Michael Middleton lived in Amman, Jordan. At the time, Michael was a manager at British Airways and Carole, formerly a flight attendant, was on extended maternity leave. Before Kate began university at St. Andrews, where she’d meet a humble bloke by the name of Will Wales, she did a gap year in Florence, studying Renaissance culture, and embarked on a charity trip to Chile.

2. Like most Tiger Beat–loving girls of the ’90s, Kate had a massive crush on Prince William, reportedly hanging a picture of him on her bedroom wall in pastoral Bucklebury, England. In Andrew Morton’s William & Catherine: Their Story, her friend Jessica Hay said, “We would sit around talking about all the boys at school we fancied, but Catherine would always say: ‘I don’t like any of them. They’re all a bit rough.’ Then she would joke: ‘There’s no one quite like Prince William.’ ” Kate did have a high school boyfriend: Willem Marx, now a journalist, and, pre-William, she dated law student Rupert Finch. Once Kate and Will shared a house with friends in their second year at St. Andrews, the rest was history.

3. Before becoming a professional princess, Kate held—gasp—a civilian job. After graduating from St. Andrews in 2005, she became an assistant buyer at London retailer Jigsaw. She was even said to have fetched coffees on photo shoots before leaving the position in 2007.

4. Kate’s signature scent is Jo Malone Orange Blossom. At her request, candles burned the scent in Westminster Abbey (beneath maple trees that had also been hauled in) on the royal wedding day, April 29, 2011 (as if one could forget). But it wasn’t the only special aroma of the day: As a nod to her future husband, Kate carried the flower Sweet William in her bouquet.

5. As they say in the U.K., Kate is a “keen” photographer: She snapped the first official photo of Princess Charlotte (a dumpling in the lap of brother Prince George) at their Norfolk country house, Anmer Hall, as well as the photos of Prince George attending his first day of preschool at Westacre Montessori in Norfolk. Kate also took photos for her parents’ British party-planning chain, Party Pieces. Goals for 2016.

Mexican President Says Drug Kingpin “El Chapo” Guzman Caught By Authorities

The leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel had escaped from maximum security prisons twice in his long career
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said Friday that authorities had recaptured Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel whose two escapes from maximum security prisons had baffled the world.
“Mission accomplished: We have him,” Peña Nieto wrote on Twitter.
Guzmán was arrested by elite Marine infantry units, a source in the office of the Mexican Attorney General told BuzzFeed News.

Earlier on Friday, the Mexican Navy issued a statement detailing a pre-dawn raid in Los Mochis, a small city in Sinaloa state. Five people, none of them law enforcement officers, were killed during the raid, which the Navys said was based on a tip. Six people were arrested, but they were not identified.

The most wanted drug lord in the world, Guzmán became a source of embarrassment for Peña Nieto’s government after he escaped from prison in July 2015 by riding a motorcycle through a mile-long tunnel that his cronies had dug under his cell. He had previously escaped from another facility in 2001.

Guzmán’s two escapes made him a symbol of the violence and corruption that have seized Mexico since the beginning of the so-called drug war several decades ago. Based in the western Mexican state of Sinaloa,

Guzmán’s organization remains one of the most powerful and feared drug-trafficking syndicates in the world. The cartel’s gunmen are believed to have been responsible for the deaths of thousands of rival traffickers, law-enforcement officers, and innocent civilians.

Yet many in Mexico also saw Guzmán as a kind of folk hero. His largesse with some local populations lent the kingpin the aura of a Robin Hood or a Pancho Villa — a kindly bandit from a poor peasant family who, unlike corrupt politicians, had the best interest of the people at heart.

In the past, the United States had sought to extradite Guzmán, who faces drug-related charges in several American jurisdictions. But the Mexican authorities insisted on having the kingpin serve his full sentence in a Mexican prison before being sent to the United States. President Peña Nieto, in particular, saw keeping the kingpin in Mexico as a matter of national pride, telling reporters that it would be “unforgivable” if he ever escaped again.

After his latest escape, however, the Mexican authorities signaled that they would allow the kingpin’s extradition.

Scott Disick -- PDA With New Swedish Model Girlfriend (PHOTOS)

Scott Disick is no longer hiding his new relationship, because we got pics of Scott and girlfriend Lina Sanberg very openly showing affection in a very public place.
Scott, Lina and one of Scott's pals lunched at the Polo Lounge in Bev Hills. They were kissing inside the restaurant, located inside the very popular Beverly Hills Hotel.

Scott Disick is making 2016 all about the new. The “Scott Disick new girlfriend” rumors are true, as is the news that Scott has a hot new bachelor pad. Just one day after new broke of Scott Disick’s budding relationship with Swedish model Lina Sandberg, we’ve found out Disick dropped a cool $6 million on a Hidden Hills house of his very own–one that’s a bit farther way from the Calabasan Kardashians
The Scott Disick new girlfriend story has apparently incensed Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian, both of whom feel like Scott misled them when he initially tried to get back in the family’s good graces late last year. According to numerous sources, though, reps for Scott confirm that he really is dating noted Scandinavian model Lina Sandberg, and that the two are becoming quite happy together. The couple has “seen each other a few times” and are letting things get “really hot,” said one source. Another, according to E!, chimed in by saying that, as far as Scott Disick and Lina Sandberg go, “she [Lina] wants to protect him right now. She’s very private and loyal.”
The source added that “She’s told friends he’s a really good person.” Who is Lina Sandberg? According to her bio at noted modeling agency Wilhelmina International, she’s a leggy 5’10” Swede, and has done high-profile work in both the U.S. and abroad. Though her exact age seems to be a well-kept secret, Lina Sandberg does have an active Instagram page.
The model has known Scott for awhile, but a month ago they went to Nobu restaurant in West Hollywood and the relationship changed. We're told they talk and text all the time and in the last month they've seen each other frequently. It's a pretty clear sign ... Kourtney's history.

Despite having already experienced menopause, doctors prepared Thompson’s body for pregnancy, and used the couple’s remaining embryos from their final round of in vitro fertilization (IVF). On Wednesday, baby Kelcey – named in honor of both Tracey and Kelley – arrived weighing 6 pounds 11 ounces.
“It’s such a blessing that I can do this for my daughter,” Thompson said.

Benue State APC Asks David Mark to Withdraw From Senatorial Re-run

The ruling party, APC, led by the deputy governor, Benson Abounu, at the party’s zonal caucus meeting has however advised the former Senate President, David Mark, to, “humbly withdraw from the senatorial re-run election so as to avoid shameful defeat.”

Meanwhile, former Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro has asked the political gladiators in Benue State to focus on issues that affect the people positively rather than dissipating energy on campaign of calumny.
Abounu said that the decision by the Idoma people to reject opposition politics is a time-honoured one taken by them, adding, “David Mark himself had always argued that the people of the zone remain in the mainstream of the nation’s politics and wondered why he now turns round to ask them to do exactly what would affect them politically and economically.”

The deputy governor maintained that the decision of the people of Benue South Senatorial District to embrace the APC is irrevocable, stating that the contest is one that pitches the former Senate President against the people and their desire to be part of the change agenda of the All Progressives Congress.
Moro, who is the Director General of Senator David Mark campaign organisation, stated that at the moment, “We are concerned with the issues of rerun election for Benue South as ordered by the appeal tribunal. A few uninformed persons have engaged in spreading falsehood that 16 years of Mark in the Senate did not benefit the Idoma people. History will judge.

“Mark is not just another senator, he is a man who stood to be counted when it mattered. He presided over the Senate that stabilised democracy through the invocation of Doctrine of Necessity and saved the politics from the precipice.

“I am so confident that the Idoma man and woman who appreciates the worth of Mark will neither betray nor let him down. He is the choice,” former minister stated.
Moro added “Nothing can be farther from the truth, Mark remains the only single individual who has been consistent with scholarship award to students of Benue State since 2005. At the moment no fewer than 20,000 students have been awarded scholarship since inception.

Also in his reaction, a top supporter of David Mark and former Chairman of Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Chief Patrick Ogbu, said APC’s call on Mark to withdraw from the race is mere propaganda, insisting that the people of Benue South District are behind Senator Mark and would vote him again as their representative.

“We the people of Benue South otherwise referred to as Zone C are solidly behind Mark, the Idoma kingdom must protect his integrity; after all, his records or past antecedents will speak for him, not minding the external forces against him,” Ogbu stated.

“As far as we know, Senator Mark, chosen by God will go back to complete his tenure at the Senate,” he said.

Speaking at the meeting, the state Chairman of APC, Abba Yaro, alleged that PDP members from the zone are going round to buy Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVC) from the electorate and advised the people to keep their cards and not allow anyone have access to them.

Transgender airline passenger humiliated after being forced to remove prosthetic penis during airport security check

A transgender passenger was forced to remove a prosthetic penis for inspection while going through airport security - an act which made him feel 'demeaned'.
After completing a full body scan and removing the prosthetic, the passenger felt embarrassed when a senior member of staff put on two pairs of gloves before saying 'you want me to touch that thing with my bare hands?'.
The man expressed his concern after the incident which took place in 2015, and submitted a complaint through the National LGBTI Health Alliance to a Senate committee inquiry on airport and aviation security.

The passenger, who was formerly a woman before transiting to a man, was subjected to a full body scan at the airport, thought to be in Australia, after which a staff member donned two pairs of gloves to handle the Pen*-is, saying, “you want me to touch that thing with my bare hands?”
The incident, which allegedly took place in 2015, is the subject of a complaint made via the National LGBTI Health Alliance in Australia to a Senate committee inquiry on airport and aviation security.
The transgender passenger said he was selected to go through a body scanner at the airport which picked up a prosthetic he was wearing in his underwear.
‘I explained to the officer at the scanner that I am trans and that I was wearing a prosthetic, to which he responded that he would need to get his supervisor,’ the transgender person said. In full view of other travellers, the Supervisor approached me putting rubber gloves on. He seemed more concerned with displaying his authority and making a spectacle out of the situation.  When I asked him what the gloves were for, he told me that he was going to do a ‘private search’.
In a formal statement by the LGBTI health alliance it noted its concerns regarding the 'climate of pervasive discrimination against LGBTI populations' in airport and aviation security.

'When I asked him what the gloves were for, he told me that he was going to do a 'private search'.
'Not only did this make me feel incredibly uneasy, and anxious, but it was demeaning and unnecessary.'
The passenger was taken into a small room with two security officers, and was made to sign a form first before the body search.
The supervisor proceeded to put on a second glove and when asked why, he replied: 'You want me to touch that thing with my bare hands?'.
The transgender person placed the prosthetic on a tray and the supervisor then patted him down.
'Once he was satisfied, he turned around and opened the door for me to leave - my prosthetic still sitting in the tray,' the passenger added.
'I asked him to close the door so that I could have some privacy as I placed my prosthetic back in place.
'He closed the door and both men stood watching me as I put it back in place.
'I felt that the supervisor had no regard for me as a human being and treated me as though I was a criminal right from the beginning, even though I had taken all steps to cooperate with him.
I have had to deal with some very confronting situations in the past so have developed a thick skin, but this experience overshadowed what was meant to be a holiday and it has left me feeling incredibly degraded and has made me anxious about travelling.'
The passenger submitted his complaint as part of a Senate inquiry into airport and aviation security which will make it's final report in May.

Oshodi Traders were Adequatly Notified – Lagos Government

The Lagos State Government on Thursday defended the relocation of traders plying their trade in Owonifari Market within the notorious loop of Oshodi to the newly built ultra-modern Isopakodowo Market in Bolade-Oshodi, saying the action was taken in the overall interest of public good, safety and security.

Speaking during a joint press briefing addressed by the State’s Ministries of Information and Strategy, The Environment, Physical Planning and Urban Development, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Office of Civic Engagement, the Government said it constructed an alternative market stall for the traders which can conveniently accommodate over 600 shops and hundreds of kee Clamps, and agreed to subsidize payment by giving shops at the new market at a monthly give away price of N5, 000.
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde said the traders were adequately notified before the exercise took place as required by law, and that government engaged with the leadership of the market severally before carrying out the demolition exercise on Owonifari Market.
While clarifying issues on the demolition which took place on January 5, 2016, Ayorinde said it was important for people to note that the issue of the market had been on for nothing less than ten years, adding that government had been engaging the leadership of the market to make them realize that it could no longer continue in the manner in which the market was being used.
He said unfortunately, the leadership of the market, in the last three years, refused to move despite the fact that the new market has over 600 shops apart from the kee clamps which takes the number of people that the market could conveniently accommodate to over a thousand all together.
Ayorinde said having been satisfied that government had provided a befitting alternative, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode through the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, invited the leadership of the market to the Executive Chambers and met with them on December 16, 2015, where he reiterated his plans for Oshodi and the need to move the traders to Isopakodowo which as at that time had been ready for a couple of years.
Giving a further background, the Commissioner said: “A few of them expressed certain misgivings but largely they felt that if their interest would be accommodated within the Isopakodowo Market, that they were willing and ready to move and on our part, we said that the discussion should be ongoing particularly regarding how much they would pay for each store within that market.
“After that, on Monday December 21, 2015, Governor Ambode went on a tour of that market area particularly at Isopakodowo in company with a few members of the Exco. Again, we met with the leadership of the market where it was eventually agreed based on the proposition by the leadership that what they were willing to pay for each shop at Isopakodowo was N5, 000.
“There is nowhere in Lagos where you will agree to be paying N5, 000 per shop not to talk of the central Oshodi, but the Governor agreed with them and we said we were ready to concede after which we now formally served them with a quit notice through the office of the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development,” he said.
Speaking further, Ayorinde denied allegation that many goods of the traders were destroyed in the demolition exercise, adding that such was far from the truth.
He said: “The intention of government certainly was not to destroy any goods and we did not destroy any goods because we believe that a good number of the traders, if not all, had moved because they were aware that they needed to move.
“Government, I should say, will not be blackmailed because we had done everything humanly possible and you know that the hallmark of this government has been compassion. It is a compassionate government.
“The intention was not to destroy the market or destroy properties or to make life inconvenient for them. We believe very strongly that Isopakodowo market is quite ideal; its a lot bigger store-per-store than where they had been removed now and the aim of government, as we stated earlier, is to ensure that that area of the market conforms with the type of image that we want Lagos to be, which is to return sanity to the place, to beautify the market, to construct a world class bus terminus around that place and to ensure that people who use that place on a daily basis – the commuters, traders, everybody enjoy what it means to go to a market in a mega city.
“We also believe that the exercise will largely reduce the gridlock that is associated with that area and then the criminalities that were rampant in that Oshodi. What we have done is in the interest of the generality of Lagosians,” Ayorinde said.
He added: “You will see from the reports that quite a good chunk of the traders acknowledged that they had been properly served and that they were ready to move which was why a good number of them, if not all, parked their things just before the end of last year.
“Along the line, we got intelligence report that during the holidays there were a number of criminal activities going on in the market and that the place was harbouring criminals and a number of untoward activities which of course necessitated the need to move immediately to safeguard lives, to safeguard properties and to ensure that there was no breach of peace which was what led to the demolition.”

80th Birthday Dinner: Soyinka replies Rivers State Government

Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has described as ‘abominable distractions,’ statement by the Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Dr Austin Tam-George, that the state would demand refund from him (Soyinka) if he collected cash from the  N82 million allegedly spent by immediate-past Governor, Rotimi Amaechi on a dinner to honour him.
Soyinka, who reacted in a statement on Wednesday night, said it has never been his business to probe into the “catering and logistical implications” of the hundreds of recognitions he had enjoyed worldwide and wondered why the Ameachi gesture has become an issue under the ‘insecure’ incumbent of the Rivers State government lodge.

Although he said the allegation has made him saddened and ‘truly despair”, he added that he was indifferent  to it.
Soyinka in the statement entitled, “Those who flounder in the sewage of corruption,” said: “This morning, I saw only the headlines in one or two print media regarding the 80th Birthday dinner to which I was hosted by the former governor of Rivers State, the Honorable Rotimi Amaechi, now Minister of Transportation. I ignored them. It was not, and remains not my business to probe into the catering and logistical implications of the hundreds of institutions and governments all over the world to whom I acknowledge an immense debt of unsolicited recognition over the years.
“Since then however, I have learnt of some unsavory statements by the insecure incumbent of the Rivers State government Lodge. These included a loose invitation to anti-crime agencies to investigate the potential crime of being honoured through any occasion. The unprecedented call by this governor is prescient of a warning I recounted in my recent pamphlet publication THE REPUBLIC OF LIARS, and was taken from my address to an anti-corruption global conference that took place in Tunisia two years ago. Those words were: CORRUPTION STRIKES BACK. In this ongoing instance, that expression translates most vividly as “Those who are neck deep in the sewage of corruption ensure that they splatter sewage in all possible and improbable directions.”
“I do however fully support the Wikeleaks call for multi-directional probes. I recommend further that he involve the services of INTERPOL to guarantee its extension to all international organisations and governments to whom I owe uncountable events of recognition – including birthday luncheons, dinners, cultural receptions and events of real, fictitious, or simply opportunistic flavoring – to which I have submitted myself.
“The descent to this present level of abominable distractions makes one truly despair. It is one that even I did not envisage when I warned – CORRUPTION STRIKES BACK! Whether it brings honour or dishonour to the nation is another matter – I am saddened, but indifferent.
“EFCC and company – over to you! You all know where I live,” noted The Nobel laureate.
