She may have two of the most recognisable people in the world - Beyoncé and Jay Z - as her parents, but little Blue Ivy Carter's pretty face is rarely seen.
Along with Prince George and North West, Blue is one of a handful of children who has been world famous even before she was born - with Beyoncé even announcing her pregnancy with a knowing belly-rub whilst on stage at the 2011 VMAs - but her parents take great care to shield her from the limelight, meaning little Miss Carter has had to get creative with styling
Whether using the camera angle to her advantage (a classic celebrity manoeuvre to avoid unwanted or under-styled photographs being taken); using her parents as a glamorous human shield; or employing a variety of accessories - from oversized hats to sunglasses - as a disguise, Blue stays out of the limelight. As much as a hip-hop princess with the world's most powerful parents can anyway.

The application of wisdom for financial empowerment leads to Financial freedom, below are tips to help you achieve that freedom.
1. Breaking The Fallow Grounds
Of The Mind For Creative Ideas
The human mind is
the greatest asset God gave man. It holds the keys to all accomplishments in
life. There is no limit to what the mind of man is capable of doing. Anything
you can think of and believe, you are capable of achieving, because there are no barriers to a man’s attainment
in life except those established in his mind.
When the mind of man
comes into contact with the wisdom of God it produces a sixth sense called creative imagination. It is this
creative imagination that gives man the superior command over life to attain
economic heights. You need the wisdom of God in order to harness the unlimited
economic power lying dormant in your mind. Begin to break the fallow grounds of
your mind for the release of creative ideas to make way for the economic
empowerment you desire. 2. Discovering Your Connecting
Point to Access the Unlimited Resources of the Earth. “Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place
for gold where they fine it. Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is
molten out of the stone…. As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire. The
stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold. There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and
which the vulture's eye hath not seen:
The lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by
it”. Job 28:1-2, 5-8
Everybody has a
connecting point to economic empowerment. Yours may be different from mine but
that is not the issue. The important thing is the ability to discover your
connecting point in order to access your portion of the abundance of the earth.
The scripture says; “Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a placefor gold where they fine it. Iron is taken out of the earth, and
brass is molten out of the stone…” It takes wisdom to make discoveries.
Therefore get in touch with the wisdom of God in order to discover your
connecting point. It may be your work, a gift or talent you were born with, a
person you must come into contact with etc. 3.
Creating Work as a Channel for Your Economic Empowerment.
No man has ever been
blessed in vacuum or idleness. It takes a channel, for finances to flow into
the lives of people and your work that you do for a living is that channel. “and whatsoever he doeth, it shall prosper”.
It is the works of our hands God blesses, not our desires. When the wisdom of
God comes upon you, it empowers you with creative and innovative ways of doing
that same work but in different ways and becoming financially prosperous.
Wisdom will empower you with uncommon skills and expertise to get better
rewards for your labour and efforts. You will no longer operate only with your
experience on the job, but also with expertise through wisdom for empowerment.
You realise that
when Isaac encountered the wisdom of God he did not need to change his
occupation as a crop farmer, but he was rather supernaturally empowered for
uncommon results. Likewise, Jacob didn’t need to change his profession as an
animal farmer. He maintained it and was blessed through it. You too may not need
to change your occupation, because what you need is not a change of occupation
but an encounter with the wisdom of God.
Somebody may say,
well I don’t have any work doing to begin with. To you I say create your own
work. What is work? I have an acronym as the definition for work:
Wisely
Organizing
Relevant
Knowledge
Work may therefore be defined as “Wisely
Organizing Relevant Knowledge”.
What I mean by this definition is that you can create your own work
without looking for a non-existent job. How do we do it? Since work is all
about solving problems or meeting needs and getting paid for the services
rendered, you begin by identifying in your environment, problems nobody is
solving and needs nobody is meeting.
Go to work immediately to find out the kind of knowledge that is
relevant to the solving of those problems and meeting those needs. Acquire that
relevant knowledge, organize that knowledge wisely and begin solving those
problems and meeting those needs and you’ve got work to do and you will very
soon be on your way to becoming economically empowered. This is what wisdom for
economic empowerment is all about.
Are you a young graduate who has completed school and has been seeking
for a job but is finding none? Your answer is to stop searching for a job and
start thinking of how to create one and employ other colleagues of yours
instead of seeking to become an employee. Find out what problems the knowledge
you have acquired can help solve in your society and environment. Wisely
organize that knowledge you possess to meet the demands of human needs and
you’ve solved your own unemployment problem and may be that of someone else. 4. The Wise Use of your
Spare Time as a Channel for Financial
Empowerment.
The secret key to becoming an outstanding successful person in life is the
beneficial use of ones spare time. Time
is the only universal commodity of nature with the fairest distribution.
Everybody has access to access equal amount of time; Twenty-Four hours a day,
Seven days a week, Thirty-One days a month and Fifty-Two weeks a year for all,
rich or poor, black or white, learned or unlearned, for time and chance happens
to them all.
The difference therefore in life lies in how we individually utilize
this great asset of nature. The beneficial use of one’s spare time is the secret key
to becoming an outstanding success in life. What do you do with your spare
time? Many people complain that if they had enough time they could do something
else to better their financial lives. Time is a highly perishable commodity,
and once wasted it is never recoverable.
Let us do some quick mathematics
here to see whether we make judicious use of our time or not. There are 24
hours in a day, as we all know. If you are an employee, you work from 8:00 am –
5:00 pm equaling 9 hours of the 24 hours leaving 15 hours for you. Let us also
assume you sleep for 8 hours everyday thus leaving 7 hours unaccounted for
which we can refer to as your spare time.
What you do with this time is
very crucial to your economic success or failure in life. Another way to expand
your economic time is to cut down on the hours allotted for sleep. If you sleep
for 8 hours everyday, by the time you die you would have slept for one-third of
your total life span, which is not a good omen for successful economic life.
Become wise in the use of your time, most especially your spare time. Find
something economically viable to do in your spare time, which will give you
some financial freedom, instead of depending on your employer to make you rich.
No employer has ever made any employee rich. At best, he will only give you
what is due you for your labour of service. However, to be economically
empowered for financial freedom, you need to redeem the time and make economic
use of it. 5. Wise Use of your
Talents and Gifts for Financial
Empowerment
Talents and natural gifting are divine endowments for giving means of
livelihood to his people. Your talent is not a decorative piece; it is your
vehicle to economic empowerment. Your only role is to discover, develop, and
add economic value to it and you are on your way to earning money from that
talent or gift. Look at the wealth sports stars are making from the wise use of
their natural talents all over the world today. Note however, that talents and
natural gifts are only raw materials. They only become economically viable when
we are able to turn them into marketable skills. No body employs talents or
gifts. People are looking for skills to employ, and the more skillful you become
in the use of that gift, the more you will be paid for it. There are many
talented footballers, singers, actors etc, in the world but only the skilful
ones are paid very well. The wisdom for economic empowerment here is to
discover your talents and natural endowments and develop them into economically
viable and marketable skills, and you are not far from earning money from them. 6. The Wise Use of
People’s Resources as a Channel for Financial Empowerment:
People’s resources are the greatest asset any individual or an
organization embarking on economic empowerment venture can have. You need
wisdom from above to effectively utilize this asset to your economic advantage,
but not at the expense of their legitimate entitlements. Apart from your
personal resources, you will need other people’s resources for your economic
empowerment.
How do you wisely use people’s resources as a channel for economic
empowerment?
i.
OPM – Other People’s
Monies
ii.
OPT – Other People’s
Time
iii.
OPK – Other People’s
Knowledge
iv.
OPA – Other People’s
Abilities
v.
OPG – Other People’s
Goodwill
vi.
OPE – Other People’s
Experience
You can use all the above-mentioned People’s Resources to empower
yourself economically. Note however that we are not talking about exploiting
people unduly to amass wealth for yourself. Bible frowns on that and you will
not go unpunished for that. What I am teaching you is that there are so many
people out there with these resources in abundance who do not know how to
harness and utilize them for their own economic gain. With wisdom, employ these
available resources, and pay them their due remunerations and utilize the
resources for a greater economic gain.
Let us consider some case studies for the use of the above
The use of OPM (Other
People’s Monies)
How do financial institutions make their wealth? Simply by the
principle of OPM, they take your money with the promise of keeping it safe for
you and giving it back to you at any time you want it just for a minimal
charge. They then invest your money into some viable money market instruments
with greater yields and make more money with your money for themselves. How
about that? That is financial wisdom for you.
If you happen to meet an excellent opportunity for an investment that
can yield you over a hundred percent return with no or minimal risk and you
don’t have the money it takes to seize the opportunity, do you fold your arms
and sleep? No! You look for somebody with the money who doesn’t know what to do
with it and promise him some interest for the use of his money and you are on
your way to making big time wealth for yourself. You don’t need to have your own money before
you can be economically empowered, but you surely need wisdom for that. So ‘wise up’
The use of OPK (Other
People’s Knowledge)
Henry Ford, it is said was a school drop out and a near illiterate but
he is credited with the invention of the Ford Car. How did he accomplish that?
By the principle of OPK (Other People’s Knowledge), he had a vision and a
desire backed by determination, but he had no knowledge to achieve that by
himself. He used wisdom to employ OPK to
accomplish his dream.
He was once accused of being an
ignoramus and in his defense astounded every body by saying: “I don’t need to cram my head with
knowledge I can easily get elsewhere at the snap of my fingers” By that
statement, It was held that if one knows how to get from elsewhere, the
knowledge he should have acquired by himself he cannot be said to be an
ignoramus. By that he won the case. This can work for you too. You don’t need
all the knowledge in the world to be able to make money. All you need is the
wisdom to gather around you people with the knowledge you need.
Consider this success story and get an inspiration that the OPK can
work for anybody who has wisdom enough to harness its powers.
Some Senior High School candidates who could not make it in all their
papers contacted a young man to help them in some extra classes as they were
preparing to rewrite some of their papers. He did help them and they were
successful in their exams. The news soon spread in town and many more students
started flocking to his house everyday. He was overwhelmed with their numbers and
besides, he could not handle all the courses. An idea quickly came to him to
create a remedial classes’ centre and employ the services of the graduate
teachers in the secondary schools in the town to help him. This he did and
today the place has turned into a fulltime remedial and regular school with the
young man who has not got a university education as the proprietor and
facilitator making his cool money through the use of the OPK (Other People’s
Knowledge). You too can try the OPK because it will definitely work for
you. 7. Taking Advantage of
Opportunities as a Channel for Financial Empowerment:
There is a wise quotation in my book “The Nuggets of Wisdom” which will be coming out soon that says: “If you want to be successful in life,
you must either have a chance or create one”
In the Ecclesiastes 9:11 account
of the Bible, the Preacher said: “I returned, and saw
under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong,
neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet
favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them
all”.
The word chance in this context talks of opportunities being part of
every human life. We encounter opportunities every day of our lives. The only
problem is that most of the time we are not even able to recognize the
opportunities as they come our way.
Every time you meet somebody new in life, know that it is an
opportunity to establish a relationship and to benefit from that relationship.
Some opportunities come disguised as temporary failures; some times too, they
come through the back door. Your ability to recognize and identify
opportunities in order to take advantage of them will put you on the path to
your economic empowerment.
You however, need wisdom to be able to do that. Get the wisdom to seize
existing opportunities or create your own where none exists.
It is the season for Economic Empowerment. Get Wisdom and begin to
explode financially. Get wisdom and in all your getting, get understanding.
Top Management of DAAR
Communications, owners of AIT and Ray Power F.M, led by the Chairman,
Raymond Dokpesi [Jnr], Managing Director, Tony Akiotu were at State
House, Abuja, on January 5, to present a giant seasonal card marking Eid
el Maulud, Christmas, and New Year, to President Muhammadu Buhari
The Lagos State Government on Wednesday demolished the
Owonifari Market at Oshodi which has been in existence for more than 40
years.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state
government had earlier closed the market to curb security challenges
within Oshodi metropolis.
The demolition was directly supervised in the earlier hours of Wednesday by the Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode.
Also on ground to supervise the demolition were the
Commissioner for Environment, Dr Babatunde Adejare, officials of Kick
Against Indiscipline (KIA), police and some other top government
officials.
A director in the Ministry of Environment, who is the head of the
demolition task force, declined to comment when contacted by the NAN.
NAN learnt that the affected traders and shop owners had been relocated to the new Isopakodowo Market at Bolade Area of Oshodi.
NAN also reports that the state government had said in a statement
that it planned to transform the market into an ultra-modern bus
terminus with new bus shelters befitting a structured park in a mega
city.
The demolition was completed at about 7:45 a.m.
It was reported that shop owners who are largely Igbo people from the
eastern part of the country had been issued with a notice from the
state government asking them to leave. This was however denied by
several shop owners.
A shop owner who spoke on the condition of anonymity said it was
painful to look at the rubble that used to be his investment. Sniffing
back tears, he said:
“I have been doing business in Oshodi for the past
ten years and I invested all my money and time in investing in it. I
just returned from the Christmas holiday when I was told my shop was
being demolished. I had little time to pack my things. My life is
ruined.”
Another trader who spoke anonymously said it was shameful that they
were not given enough time to evacuate. He claimed the matter was still
ongoing and people were caught by surprise when bulldozers were brought
in to clear the market.
The claim that goods and valuables were still in the shops before
they were demolished seems true as members of the demolition team were
seen putting aside appliances and gadgets while evacuation continued..
As the saying goes, “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
Last Sunday, President Muhammadu Buhari spent some time out of his
very tight schedules, in an evening of wining and dining at the Guards

A ‘good relationship’ means different things to different people.
However, good adult relationships generally involve two people who
respect each other, can communicate, and have equal rights,
opportunities and responsibilities. Most of us would also expect our
relationship with our partner to include love, intimacy, sexual
expression, commitment, compatibility and companionship.
Working at a relationship
All couples want to have a successful and rewarding relationship, yet it
is normal for couples to have ups and downs. To meet these challenges,
and to keep your relationship healthy and happy, you need to work at it.
Relationships are like bank accounts – if there are fewer deposits than
withdrawals, you will run into difficulties.
Tips for a successful relationship
Tips that may help you improve your relationship and be better prepared to meet the challenges along the way include:
Talk to each other – just because you love each other doesn’t
mean you will be able to communicate well or can read your partner’s
mind, or that they can read yours. Communicate your needs – don’t wait
for your partner to try to guess what is going on with you.
If you have something to bring up, do it gently – going on the attack rarely gets you what you want.
Listen to each other – often we are so busy defending ourselves
that we don’t hear what our partner is saying. Let your partner know
that you have heard them before you give them your response.
Remember the positives about your partner – this helps protect
your relationship. One critical comment needs five positive comments to
counteract its effect. Think carefully before saying what’s on your
mind.
Make repair attempts – if your attempts to talk about an issue
don’t go as planned, try not to let the situation become even more
negative (such as not talking for extended periods or ignoring the other
person’s attempts). Saying sorry or touching your partner in a caring
manner shows you care, even though you disagree.
Spend time together – make your relationship a priority and make
time for each other, even if you have to book it in. Regular ‘deposits
in your relationship bank account’ will help protect your relationship.
Work on feeling good about yourself – this will help the way you feel about your relationship.
Everyone is different – accept and value differences in others,
including your partner. We often choose people who have qualities and
abilities we would like more of. This is one of the reasons why our
relationships offer us significant opportunities to grow and develop as
people. Remind yourself of this.
Make plans – set goals for your relationship and plan for your
future. This shows that you are both in the relationship for the long
term.
Be supportive – try not to judge, criticize or blame each other;
we are all human. Remind yourself that you are a team, and in order for
the team to be successful, you each have to cheer the other on.
Learn from arguments – accept that arguments will happen and try
to resolve them with respect. The strongest predictor of divorce is
‘contempt’, which is any action whereby your partner feels ‘put down’ by
you, whether it is the tone of your voice or what you say. Often in
arguments, we become overwhelmed and this can often lead to behaviors
that harm our relationship.
Stay calm during disagreements – or if this is not possible,
take time out. Taking an ‘us’ perspective that prioritizes the
relationship rather than a ‘you’ and ‘me’ perspective can be very
useful.
Look at your part in the conflict rather than focusing only on
your partner’s contribution. Your partner is more likely to acknowledge
his or her contribution if you do the same. Research has shown that
relationships fall into difficulty when partners begin to think ‘here we
go again’ and this negative cycle is associated with loneliness, hurt
and disappointment.
Be sexually considerate – be affectionate (sometimes a lingering
kiss or a warm hug are just as important). Accept that individuals have
different sex drives and to sustain a healthy and happy sex life
requires negotiation. A reduction in a couple’s physical connection is
often a warning sign of problems in a relationship.
Be attentive – demonstrate your commitment to the relationship.
It is what you do for someone that tells them that you love them. We
tend to give our partner what we hope to receive but they may prefer
another form of affection. Do they like gifts, quality time with you, a
note or a cooked meal? Once you know what they like, make an effort to
provide it.
Enjoy yourself – have fun and celebrate your life together.
Rituals can enhance your relationship. It’s also important to try new
things as a couple. Doing fun activities together is very important, as
often ‘deep and meaningful about couple issues can turn into
disagreements which leave you both feeling worse, not better. Fun
activities are like glue.
Be flexible – let your relationship grow and adapt as you both change.
Share power – ensure that each of you feels that your opinion
counts. Research shows that relationships where the female partner feels
that she can influence her partner are the most successful.
Pop star, Davido, has been hospitalised following his public baby mama drama
The ‘Aye’ singer in an Instagram post on Tuesday revealed that he was about to be discharged from the hospital.
Davido, who hinted about collaboration with rising singer, Humble
Smith, however refused to disclose the name of the hospital or ailment
he was diagnosed with.
The news of his hospital admission comes after the 23-year-old was
accused by Sophia Momodu, his baby mama of kidnapping their
seven-month-old daughter, Imade Adeleke.
Since the past week, the news has turned into a full blown scandal with both parties throwing allegations at each other.
While Davido accuses his daughter’s mother of being irresponsible,
Sophia Momodu and her uncle, media entrepreneur, Dele Momodu, are saying
Davido and his family of trying to use their wealth to take the baby
away from her mother.
The ongoing investigation by the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has landed the spokesman of the
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, in the Commission’s
cell in Abuja.
Metuh, who was arrested by four operatives of the anti-graft agency
from his Abuja home, spent the first night with his interrogators at the
headquarters of the EFCC, answering questions on how the sum of N1.4
billion strayed from the account of the Office of the National Security
Adviser into a company, Destra, linked to him.
Interestingly, it was the suspect, who first hinted that the former
President, Goodluck Jonathan, had given him a job to do and that he
successfully completed the said job, but failed to say what it was and
how much he was paid for and when.
The revelation by Metuh, according to EFCC officials, prompted the
agency to beam its searchlight on cash payments from the ONSA, leading
to the discovery that he was one of the major beneficiaries of slush
funds, now a subject of investigation and prosecution by the Federal
Government.
It was learnt that out of the $2.1 billion arms funds, N400 million
was transferred from ONSA to the company on November 24, 2014 which
previously had a balance of N6, 676,576.06 only before the major
transfer from the ONSA.
A top source in the EFCC said that Metuh was also receiving a monthly pay of N4 million from ONSA.
A top EFCC source said Metuh was likely to spend the night with them
given the weight of financial transactions in ONSA traced to him and his
company.
The source said: “We arrested Chief Metuh this morning (yesterday)
and as we speak he is still being questioned and it is not likely that
he will be released today.
“We want to finish the interrogation of Metuh at once, so that we can
decide whether to charge him to court or let him to go,” the source
said.
Metuh, has, however slammed his arrest by the EFCC, claiming that he was being persecuted.
“I have not done anything unlawful. Whatever I have done in pursuance of my office, I can defend it anywhere, any time,” he said.
OWERRI —The Deputy Senate
President, Chief Ike Ekwerenmadu, has defended the cash provision for
the purchase of vehicles for Senate Committees, describing it as “a
necessary expenditure.”
Chief Ekweremadu, in Umunumo, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of
Imo State, during the presentation of about 100 tertiary scholarship
awards to students, powered by Senator Athan Achonu, also linked the
huge cost of procuring vehicles for the lawmakers on the prevailing
exchange rate for the United States’ dollar.
“It is an indisputable fact that the exchange rate for the dollar has
hit the skies in these days and age and this has adversely affected
every other commodity in the country,” Ekweremadu said.
Attributing the high cost of the purchase of vehicles for the Senate
committees’ assignment to the increase of the exchange rate, Chief
Ekweremadu opined that it was not unusual for Nigerians to blame the All
Progressives Congress, APC, for the outcome of what they saw as
abnormal.
“It is not a crime to buy vehicles for the use of Senate committees.
This would enable members of the various committees to carry out their
assignments without hitches,” Ekweremadu said.
He explained that he was in Okigwe senatorial zone of Imo State, to
witness what he described as “a life changing educational empowerment
programme, where Senator Achonu is giving hope to the indigent but
academically sound students, to study through the university and acquire
knowledge in order to have an educated society.”
Speaking earlier, Senator Achonu, representing Okigwe senatorial zone
of Imo State, pointed out that “whatever crisis facing Nigeria under
the government of the APC was traceable to lack of management.”
He stressed that Nigeria remains the most blessed by God in the
African continent and should be able to harness its resources for the
benefit of Nigerians.
Achonu said that politically, “the APC has planned to make Nigeria a
one political party state,” a step he said, was contrary to what the
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government believed in
Gunmen have kidnapped Maimunat Ogude, wife of Fegor Ogude, Super Eagles and Amkar Perm of Russia player, according to TheCable.
Ogude, who spoke with TheCable on Tuesday, said his wife was
kidnapped by unknown armed men in Warri. Delta state, on Monday night.
“I wasn’t home yesterday. My wife, Maimunat Ogude, went out with my
kids. Barely two hours that I left the house, my younger brother Ogaga
called me to say that some armed men came to the house to take my wife
away,” said the midfielder, who has 16 International caps.
“I was told that they threw my kids out of the car and just took my wife in my car.
“Immediately I heard this, I had to go to the Police station to
report this. And after making the report, I tried tracing them to see if
by chance I could get the direction they went to. But I could not.
“All these happened between 7:30/8pm last night. Till this moment, I
have not heard from them. I haven’t found my wife till this moment.
“But I got a call from the police that my car had been found in
Ughelli. But no words yet from the kidnappers. I don’t know the state in
which my wife is since last night.”
After Davido’s accusation of Sophie Momodu causing their daughter’s medical problem through her use of cannabis, Sophie through her lawyers wrote to the clinic where the test reportedly took place demanding a copy of the said pathology report. Below is a copy of the letter sent to the clinic:

The birth of Kanu’s child was announced in a message posted on the Facebook page of Radio Biafra London.
The statement read: “Good morning great Biafrans. With joy in our

IF there is anybody I can vouch for in Buhari’s Cabinet, it is
Senator Udoma Udo Udoma. I have known him, and his best friend Keem
Bello Osagie, for 30 years. All three of us are graduates of Oxford
University, England, although I was there before him and Keem. Udoma is
as sharp as a razor; he is one of the most intelligent people I know.
Better still, he is a man of unimpeachable integrity. Udoma cannot be
bought. He has a very successful law practice; the last thing he would
do is fiddle public funds.
Udoma was a two-term Senator of the Federal Republic, where he
distinguished himself representing Akwa Ibom. His people would always
remember him as the man who ensured that Akwa Ibom now receives one of
the biggest, if not the biggest, share of oil money from the federal
government. While many of his Senate colleagues pocketed N50 million
bribes to support Obasanjo’s dastardly third-term bid, including those
who nevertheless voted against it; Udoma rejected the bribe and joined
the campaign against the scheme.
Thereafter, he knew even his re-nomination as PDP Senate-candidate
from Akwa Ibom would be blocked. So he quietly bid the Senate and
politics goodbye. But righteousness will always exalt a man. Udoma was
sought after by blue-chip companies. He re-surfaced as Chairman of UAC
and a Director of Unilever. He
also became in 2010 chairman of the
Governing Board of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Planning in a hurry
On 11 November, 2015, President Buhari appointed Udoma as Minister of
Budget and Planning. Six weeks later, the president presented the 2016
budget to the National Assembly. This makes the budget an inevitable
casualty of timing. A new Nigerian president is sworn in at the end of
May in an election year. He is expected to have his cabinet in place by
June. That would give a Minister of Budget and Planning six months to
work on a budget.
However, when Buhari became president in the middle of an economic
crisis, the first thing he did was to squander the first five months. In
that time, anti-corruption propaganda became a substitute for policy.
The economy nose-dived; going from bad to worse. Queried about the delay
in choosing his cabinet, the president bad-mouthed anticipated
ministers as “noise-makers.” When he finally succumbed to the
Constitution by unfolding his Cabinet, the year had virtually come to an
end.
Udoma is a man well-prepared for public office. However, in the
short-term, he will have to defend as, a team-player minister, a budget
unlikely to be his brainchild. Udoma could not have known he would be
the Minister of Budget and Planning. But now he has to defend a budget
he could not have planned. Frankly, there are a number of things in this
budget that are indefensible.
In the medium-term, Udoma is in the unenviable position of being an
economics minister to a president who clearly has very limited
understanding of economics. Worse-still, he is minister to a president
who castigates ministers as noise-makers. That indicates Buhari is not
likely to be open to wise counsel. It would not surprise me if schemes
like the ante-diluvian counter-trading are mooted again from Aso Rock
sooner or later.
Pretend Budget
The first thing that becomes noticeable in the 2016 budget is that it
is a budget of pretension. Nigeria is still a monocultural economy. The
oil, on which the lionshare of the nation’s income depends, has
suffered a drastic decline in price in the international market. But the
government has decided to pretend as if nothing has happened. No
austerity whatsoever is entertained. As a matter of fact, in the name of
stimulating the economy, the president has decided to present a budget
that assumes Nigeria has suddenly become richer overnight, when in fact
we have become poorer.
Buhari presents N6.08trn 2016 budget to NASS
This is a very neat trick. In 2015, the total federal budget was
N4.45 trillion naira. In 2016, in the middle of an economic downturn,
this has been increased dramatically to N6.08 trillion. The new 2016
budget is based on the price of oil being $38 a barrel, ignoring the
fact that the price has already fallen below that to $36. Indeed, the
IMF projects the price might fall even further in 2016 by $5 to $15;
bringing it down to as low as $20. But the government is not prepared to
contemplate that eventuality. How can the APC enjoy the trappings of
power if, after so long in the political wilderness, its turn is now to
be constrained by austerity?
Therefore, observe the following contradictions. In the middle of
looming economic adversity, the government has decided to be even more
profligate than the previous administration. For example, in 2014, the
budget for Aso Rock was N12 billion. In 2015, President Jonathan
judiciously reduced this to N6.6 billion. But in 2016, Buhari has raised
this by 50% to N18 billion. One of the more ludicrous aspects of this
is the N3.6 billion earmarked for the purchase of an unspecified number
of BMW saloon cars!
Clearly, there will be no austerity in Aso Rock in 2016. As a matter
of fact, it would appear that elephants will be on the menu for lunch. A
whopping N1.75 billion has been budgeted for feeding in Aso Rock in
2016. Goodluck Jonathan was pilloried for spending N1 billion in 2011.
He reduced this to N717 million in 2013; N542 million in 2014; and N530
million in 2015. But now Buhari has decided to increase this by more
than 100%. N115 million is budgeted for foodstuffs and catering
materials for President Buhari alone, an increase of over 64% above that
of President Jonathan.
If you were of the view that the president has spent too much of his
honeymoon period gallivanting abroad this year, think again. N1.4
billion has been allocated for his travel expenses in 2016; N470 million
more than that of Jonathan in 2015. The maintenance of the 10 aircraft
presidential fleet that the president attacked as wasteful when he was
asking Nigerians for our votes will cost N3.6 billion in 2016. N764
million is budgeted for the construction of recreational facilities just
for Mr. President.
The same lavishness is also proposed for the vice-president. Not to
be left out, the National Assembly will cost us nothing less than N115
billion.
These are the kinds of changes the APC has in store for Nigeria in fiscal 2016.
Voodoo Buharinomics
Where is the money for all the extra expenditures in 2016 supposed to
come from given the sharp reduction in our income? There is a lot of
talk about squeezing more money out of taxation, creating greater
efficiencies in the MDAs, and generating more income from agriculture
and solid minerals. But it is just talk.
Only N29 billion is devoted to the Ministry of Agriculture, while
more money, N39 billion, is earmarked for Ministry of Information and
Culture. But of course, Lai Mohammed has already told us he plans to
have one cultural festival a day, 365 days in 2016; although he has
already missed a few days.
Principally, the government has decided to go a-borrowing. It
proposes to borrow N1.88 trillion in 2016; 30.9% of the total budget; N1
trillion more than was borrowed in 2015. This is where the whole thing
gets even more ludicrous.
When the APC came to power, the first thing it attacked was Nigeria’s
debt-profile under the previous Jonathan administration. Vice-President
Osibajo complained that: “Our economy is currently in perhaps its worst
moment in history. Local and international debt stands at $60 billion.”
The APC answer to this predicament is now to borrow more in 2016 than we
did in 2015. Osibajo complained that our debt-servicing bill in 2015
was N953 billion. How then are we to understand the APC decision to
increase that debt-servicing bill to N1.8 trillion in 2016; an increase
of nearly 100%. Osibajo complained that our debt-servicing bill was 21%
of the budget under Jonathan in 2015. But now under Buhari, 30.9% of the
total federal budget in 2016 is going to be financed by debt.
Suddenly, the same government that complained it inherited a huge
burden of debt from the PDP now argues that Nigeria is under-borrowed.
That is the new truth now being dished out by government spin-doctors.
Kemi Adeosun, the new Finance Minister, now says Nigeria’s debt to GDP
ratio is low at 12%. She compares this conveniently to Angola (57%) and
South Africa (48%).
In which case, our indebtedness is no longer an albatross. Since the
APC has replaced the PDP at the centre, we can now borrow as much as we
like. This is all well and good. Except that it is exactly how we got
into the debt predicament of the 1980s and 1990s. It means in 2016, we
will spend N4 billion every day on debt-servicing.
Productive debt
The government promises that, this time, it is only going to borrow
for capital projects. But it cannot tell us precisely what these capital
projects are. All we have are promissory notes that they will be for
infrastructural projects like roads, rails and power supply. However,
promissory notes from this APC government are no longer worth a dime.
In 2015, the federal budget was N4.5 trillion. Nevertheless, the
government was able to gather as much as N1.5 billion into the TSA
account. This represents money not spent from previous budgets. This
should tell us that we did not even have the capacity to spend what we
earned. Monies voted for recurrent expenditure gets gobbled up more or
less. But capital projects are either ignored, uncompleted, or big
chunks of the earmarked money are stolen.
What the government now proposes to do is to increase even that
usually unspent money, without first fixing the underlying lack of
capacity-utilization. Since the government actually has no structural
anti-corruption policy, beyond declaring its enemies guilty without
trial, all that might happen here is that we are simply making more
money available for graft.
Then there is the brilliant idea of employing 500,000 graduates as
teachers in the rural areas. Quite apart from the difficulty of
assembling and equipping these graduates, the cost of the project is
prohibitive. A modest 50,000 monthly wage bill will come to N300 billion
per annum, while the total amount allocated for education is N369
billion.
My conclusion is simple. The APC won the election in the wrong
country. The government should be shipped elsewhere; perhaps to France.
The Mavin Records boss, Don Jazzy, appears easy going,
self-effacing and quiet. When he newly entered the industry he barely
spoke, posing with his trademark walking stick, his then partner,
D’Banj, acting as his mouth piece. He whispered in D’Banj’s ears and the
Kokomaster passed on the message to the world.
Don Jazzy However, subsequent events in his career have shown
that the leader of the Supreme Mavin Dynasty may not be as reserved as
he may have wanted the public to believe. As calm as he may appear in
public, since his start with Mo’Hits, he has been consistently involved
in one major beef or the other with his colleagues in the industry.
Olayinka Obey takes us through five of the major
public drama, Don Jazzy has been involved including the latest – and
since resolved – Headies war-of-words with Olamide.
1. Don Jazzy vs. Kay Switch
Kay Switch You remember Kay Switch? D’Banj’s younger brother and
a member of the defunct Mo’Hits crew? It may come as a surprise to many
that Kay Switch didn’t record even one single under the label for the
about eight years he swas signed to it. No
wonder he included several shades to Don Jazzy in the lyrics of his
songs since leaving Mo’hits. Kay Switch claimed his brother’s former
partner did not believe in his musical talents and as such denied him
several chances to prove his worth. Even though he doesn’t call any
names, an astute listener of Kay Switch’s songs would know who he is
singing about.
2. Don Jazzy vs. D’Banj
Dbanj This was the one that broke our hearts to
pieces. Who does not know the story of D’Banj and Don Jazzy? They had a
formidable and enviable partnership with their then label, churning out
hits after hits. But the Mo’Hits ship capsized in 2012 and the split
to form their own record labels, with only Kay Switch following his
brother to DB Records and the rest staying with Don Jazzy and his Mavin
Records.
The D’Banj/Don Jazzy beef was reportedly based
on the former’s desire to widen his musical coasts to the US while the
latter preferred to stay in his own lane, and remain in Nigeria where
they were already big. They have tried several times to bury the hatchet
and move on, having been seen together at shows dedicating awards to
each other and most recently performing together at Timaya’s I Concur
concert. Even 2Face Idibia pleaded for one more song for the fans at his
Fortyfied concert back in September 2015.
3. Don Jazzy vs. JJC
JJC
JJC was the frontman of a UK-based Nigerian music
group called JJC and 419 Squad with which D’Banj and Don Jazzy were
associated, although not regular members of the band. The duo, however,
moved to Nigeria to establish the defunct Mo’Hits and build a large
music empire to the disappointment of JJC. On his return to the country,
JJC went on several media blasting both Don
Jazzy and D’Banj for their “betrayal”. However, these days, it appears
tempers have cooled as the African Skank singer, back in 2014, was seen
in Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records studio making beats.
4. Don Jazzy vs. Wande Coal
Wande Coal
One of Don Jazzy’s loyalists that followed him
from the dismantled Mo’Hits to Mavin Records got in the bad books of his
erstwhile boss when he released a song Babyface. Prior to release of
that song, Wande Coal had shown an inclination to stand alone, launching
his Black Diamond label. Things went sour
when Don Jazzy publicly accused Wande Coal of intellectual theft on
social media for the Babyface, which pushed the latter to finally
announce his exit from Mavin Records. It
turned out to be a huge show of shame from erstwhile partners as many
thought there issues should have been sorted out privately. The
controversy affected the acceptance of the song
5. Don Jazzy vs. Olamide
Olamide
The latest and biggest of the many Don
Jazzy vs. other artistes beefs is the 2016 agenda setting music industry
beef on January 1, at The Headies. Olamide,
who felt the award organizers cheated his protégé Lil Kesh in 2015 out
of the Rookie of the Year was furious when the Efejoku singer lost again
to Mavin’s Reekado Banks. He expressed his rage at the awards
organizers when another of his protégé Adekunle Gold stepped up to
receive his award for Sade in the Best Alternative Song category. Don
Jazzy, while receiving the Special Recognition award, chose to respond
to Olamide’s rant, which he assumed was directed at him and his Mavin
crew. Olamide then went on to “wash” the Don on Twitter, calling his
humility a show. The two have since reconciled but would that be the end
of the beef?
